Elemental Records and Universal Music (UMG) present this special edition vinyl 180 gram gatefold binder. Buttercorn Lady brings together Art Blakey and his legendary Jazz Messengers into a unique moment of their history. The album was recorded at the famed Lighthouse Jazz Club in 1966, just months after recording pianist Keith Jarrett to the group, the album was released the same year by the label Limelight Records. It is Jarrett's first official recording as a member of the Jazz Messengers and also the only record meeting between Blakey and the pianist, making this album a particularly valuable piece in the history of modern jazz. The quintet was rounded off by brilliant trumpeter Chuck Mangione, tenor saxophonist Frank Mitchell and double bassist Reggie Johnson. Surprisingly, this extraordinary - albeit short-lived - training of the Jazz Messengers left behind only this engraved testimony. The result is a vibrant and energetic album in which Blakey's rhythmic thrust intersects with the overwhelming imagination of young Jarrett and the collective talent of a band as volatile as it is memorable.
