Each track on 'BlackGate' is designated simply as either a movement or a segue which 'serve as episodes that capture the rise and fall of lived emotion - rushing, yielding, brisk and bright, heavy and halting - mirroring life's rhythms'. Gilmore pushes his trio to the far ends of their sonic spectrum: The light bouncing rhythms of 'MVE I' are dissolved into a solid wall of noise, the meditative harp in 'MVE II' is met by screeching bowed strings, 'MVE III' adds a Yamaha DX7 into the mix, adding ghostly echoes mirrored in the harp, and 'MVE IV's haunting opening renders itself into a lush and pulsing sound world.
