Kelan Phil Cohran was a pivotal figure in Chicago's spiritual-jazz movement, long shaped by his years with Sun Ra and his own Artistic Heritage Ensemble, and this reissued planetarium commission shows how deeply the city's cosmic impulses lived in him. 'Theme' opens with a quiet radiance, the unusual mix of double basses, harps and percussion forming a soft gravitational pull. 'White Nile' stretches out in a slow drift, cornet lines circling like signals from a distant point, while 'Cohran Blues' brings his Frankiphone into focus, its electrified shimmer giving the piece its lift. Flip around, 'The Dogon' and 'Sahara' move with a gently psychedelic sway before 'Kilimanjaro' closes in warmer, earthier tones. It's a transportive document from a singular Chicago mind.
