Closing Night is the debut solo album from artist and producer Sean Rogan,
which delicately traces a period of personal change during a breakdown of a
relationship
Written over two years and recorded primarily in a bedroom in Greenwich, London,
Rogan's self- produced album brings together a wide circle of musician friends and
collaborators to create an intimate, vulnerable album that examines endings,
beginnings, and the complex process of letting go whilst learning how to inhabit a
new life. Closing Night employs the importance of improvisation, heavy use of
cassette recorders, and a commitment to keeping performances intact. Rogan's
album explores the experience of leaving home, carrying old versions of yourself into
unfamiliar places, and discovering that change seldom arrives as a clean break.
The album also marks a turning point in Rogan's approach to recording. Influenced by
techniques learned from producer Philip Weinrobe during a recording course
undertaken while making the record, the sessions embraced performance,
spontaneity and collaboration over perfection. Many tracks were recorded live, often
without headphones, allowing conversations, room sounds and the constant
backdrop of the main road outside in Greenwich to become part of the recordings
themselves. Rather than editing out imperfections, the album welcomes the
accidental moments, improvised performances and first takes where Rogan and his
collaborators discover the music together. Closing Night finds something captivating
in uncertainty. It is as much about the process of making music as it is about the
stories within the songs, sitting comfortably with ambiguity, and remaining firmly
grounded by raw honesty, and exploration.
